Notes from the Office
Dear Friends,
May is that delightful first month of dirt under the fingernails, first sunburns, of digging forks and earth worms. Small tufts of grass left in November have ballooned into deep-rooted mammoths, but the earth is still wet and forgiving, and with a few friends and a few hours, the weeds give way to open beds.
The People’s Medicine Garden– three large and abundant plots in the community garden at Just Roots Farm in Greenfield– are a quiet part of what we do at People’s Medicine, but it is also the very heart of our work. The garden is where we reconnect to the earth, the plants, and to each other. It’s a place where we learn and relearn that radical hope of planting seeds and the radical rewards of patience.
When folks come out to volunteer, they plant, weed, and harvest the herbs that we use in the apothecary and offer by donation at clinic. The garden also offers an opportunity for learning. While our hands work, there’s plenty of time to talk and share our knowledge….
